The phrase “coastal grandmother” recently gained traction on TikTok, but the essence of this style has been around for awhile. While I’ll focus on how the coastal grandmother vibe comes to life in a home, this aesthetic captures more than home decor – it is an entire lifestyle. The trending term depicts a laid-back, coastal lifestyle encompassing beachy clothing, cedar-shingled homes, a bowl of fresh lemons or a blooming hydrangea garden.
So for you coastal grandmother newbies – I want you to envision a stylish grandmother who lives in a light, bright, yet cozy home on Nantucket. She likes reading novels in her ivory chaise by her bay window. She wears neutral cotton sweaters over her blue striped button down, linen pants and accessorizes with woven details. Essentially she is Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give.
Luckily, to achieve a “coastal grandmother” aesthetic in your home you are neither required to have grandchildren, nor live on the coast. But fresh flowers, a white cable knit sweater and rattan furniture won’t hurt.
When it comes to curating this look with furniture and decor, you should follow these 3 principles:
- Casual, yet classic
- Coastal, but not preppy
- Relaxed, yet refined
